TWO public-spirited bodies in Newtown St Boswells have come together to create an unusual village Christmas decoration, writes Sally Gillespie.
Newtown community council recently acquired an old red phone box from British Telecom under a scheme that allowslocal communities to buy the kiosks for a nominal £1, and asked villagers to suggest uses for the iconic K6-type box.
Newtown in Bloom, which organises the village’s festive lights, suggested the box host a Christmas tree with decorations and lights throughout the festive period.
Newtown in Bloom’s Gavin Dickson said: “The tree in the box has been well received by local residents and has even made it to Facebook!”
The tree is lit up between 3.35pm and 9.45pm each day throughout December.
Ideas are being invited for uses for the kiosk after Christmas. Should it be left where it is or moved to the centre of the village, for example?
And any suggestions for its longer-term use would be welcome. Other communities that have an old phonebox have set up a photo gallery, a library for second-hand books and DVDs and a fish aquarium.
Suggestions should be handed to members of the community council, posted in the green post box next to village noticeboard, or emailed to ntvcc@btinternet.com
