TEN Borders under-16 rugby teams played their final league matches at the 3G Arena, in Galashiels, with Jed-Forest scooping the title.

The facility, with its all-weather pitch, guaranteed the matches could be played even in poor weather conditions.

Brian Renwick, regional development manager for Scottish Rugby Union, said: “Congratulations to Jed-Forest for retaining the league.

“This was a great rugby day at the 3G Arena.

“There would have not been any other venue in the region that could have hosted five matches of rugby back-to-back. As we approach what could be a spell of bad weather, I would urge all clubs and schools to think about using the pitch for matches.”

Colin Thomson, head of community rugby for the SRU, added: “It was good to see so many boys playing rugby, particularly on a weekend when so many games could have been called off.”

The five-match marathon also gave the opportunity for selectors for the Scottish and Borders under-16s squads to see all the players in action at one time.

Roddy Deans, Scotland Under-16s forwards coach, said: “The day has provided a great opportunity to see players from the region play in one venue on one day.

“The surface has supported this and the quality is great, a real preparation for those moving into regional and international under-16 programmes.”

The results from the five matches were as follows: Kelso 5 Hawick 40; Gala Red Triangle 64 Berwick 0; Peebles 0 Melrose 78; Selkirk 0 Jed-Forest 41; Duns 83 Langholm 5.

z Border Sports and Leisure Trust have recently launched an initiative entitled Don’t Postpone – Just Phone. Instead of putting their matches off because of the weather local football and rugby, clubs can now book 3G.

From the week commencing December 10, 3G has space on Saturday 15 from 12-6pm and Sunday 16 from 2-6pm. Bookings are on an absolutely first come, first served basis and can be made by calling 01896 800340.
