ABBOTSFORD
THINGS are beginning to heat up in the Border Computing Indoor League, with two of the top three teams dropping points last week.
In the pairs, John Hardie and Vic Graham went down 6–12 to Alan Howlieson and John Purves, while Jock Berthinussen and Tom Boyd won 9–5 against the Thomson brothers.
Meanwhile, Tommy Mann Jnr had a 24–7 success against Jimmy Grieve in the singles, while his team-mates, Ecky and Colin Hancock, beat Les Tait and Kev Stanners 14–2.
Other results included Ian Macdonald overcoming John Purves 18–7 and Brian Anderson winning the closest of games against John Manczak 10–9.
With all to play for over the next two weeks, the top-of-the-table clash between Team Hancock and Team Macdonald looks as if it could be decisive, with Team Bowers still in the hunt if results go their way.
TWEEDBANK
FOR the seniors, there was a tough match at Dalkeith against Midlothian last Wednesday.
Two of the four rinks managed to come out on top, but the others did not do so well and the result was a win for the hosts.
On Saturday the gents travelled to Headwell hoping to repeat the victory earned against them in the first league match of the season at Tweedbank – and they were successful by an 88-75 margin.
They are now in second place – a point behind Portobello who have a game in hand and whom the Borderers face at Tweedbank on Saturday.
A home win will put Tweedbank on top with two matches left to play.
A home fixture against East Lothian was the ladies’ task.
Unfortunately, due to illness of one of the players and being unable to arrange a late substitution, there were only three rinks in play, East Lothian starting with an eight-shot advantage.
The visitors raced ahead early on and after five ends they led by 23 shots, with all three rinks up on their opponents.
At 10 ends the situation had worsened for Tweedbank – they trailed by 33 shots.
But there was a magnificent fightback by the homesters and after 15 ends the deficit had been reduced to 14 shots. At this stage, two of the three Tweedbank rinks had moved ahead.
The recovery continued in the next few ends, with the gap coming down to 11 shots, before East Lothian managed to move away again, finally emerging triumphant by 71-57.
The one winning rink for Tweedbank was Moira Weir, Bet Ritchie, Sue Davis and Pat Houston. At nine ends they were 8-4 down on shots before picking up four shots in two ends to draw level.
Their opponents then surged ahead into 13-8 advantage, but the home quartet countered with nine shots in four ends, including a count of five. They now had a four-shot lead and with the last four ends shared finished 21-17 up.
Skips and scores: Jackie Ormiston 24, J. Fairnie 27; Pat Houston 21, R. McAinsh 17; Gail Lindores 12, E. Brown 19; Ella Brydon 0, Y.Veitch 8.
To end the week, there was news of more success for Ben McGregor.
Having already gained a place in the Under-25 trial, he has also been given a trial in the senior team – an outstanding achievement for the young player who has already played in the home international series at junior level for the last two years.
