NATIONAL LADIES DIVISION TWO

REIVERS travelled to Edinburgh for their final game before the mid-season break.

The Borders ladies were on the offensive right from the start, concentrating down the right of the pitch, where Morven Cawthorn and Denise Fairbairn were working well with Laura Mclean, Leisa Poole and Lucy Ingles up front.

Reivers pressure was relentless and soon a penalty corner was awarded after clever work by Mclean to play the foot. From an Emily Newlands strike, Fairbairn followed in from the initial save and got her first goal of the season.

From another penalty corner awarded to Reivers, which did not go according to plan, the ball found its way to Pippa Bell, who needed no second invitation to bury the ball past the keeper.

Reivers’ tails were up and they continued to press, with Fairbairn, Poole and Mclean causing havoc.

On 30 minutes another penalty corner was awarded and from a thunderous strike by Newlands, which caught the post player on the foot, the umpire awarded a clear-cut penalty flick. Player/coach Janet Jack stepped up and increased the lead to 3-0.

Reivers continued in control after the break the game. But, from a lost ball in midfield, Trinity’s striker fired past Stacey Tennent, who was unlucky not to save as she got her foot to the ball.

Both teams were now playing attacking hockey.

The visitors wanted to put the result beyond doubt, while Trinity were trying to claw back the deficit. This resulted in end-to-end plays.

The final nail in the coffin for the homesters came during the remaining five minutes of the game when Jackie Wilson, so often the goal saver, turned markswoman. Martha Douglas fed Ingles, who drove to the baseline and slipped to Mclean, who beat a defender and passed for Wilson to tap the ball past the keeper.

Coach Jack was delighted with the performance of her players, adding: “This sets up a super second half of the season for Reivers and we are looking for a top-four finish.”

Reivers: S. Tennent, J. Jack, E. Newlands, Z. Higgings, N. Wheallens, P. Bell (capt.), C. Townsend, M. Douglas, M. Cawthorn, D. Fairbairn, L. Mclean, L. Poole, L. Ingles, J. Wilson.
