FORMER Scotsman journalist Bill Chisholm, pictured, will join a panel of experts discussing the future of print in the era of e-publishing later this month.

The event, hosted by Melrose Literary Society, will take place in the Ormiston Lounge of the town’s Corn Exchange on Tuesday at 7.30pm.

Mr Chisholm, who lives in Jedburgh, received an MBE for services to journalism in 2005. His career spanned 44 years and he was the Borders correspondent for The Scotsman for three decades.

He has since presented a submission to a Scottish Government committee on the future of newspapers and has strong views on how there could still be a future for local papers, despite the challenges of the internet.

Joining him on the panel to discuss “e-books and the future of print” will be Thomas Ogilvie, of the Main Street Trading bookshop in St Boswells, and Dorothy Bruce, from Westruther, who is a member of the Borders Writers’ Forum.

“With publishing so difficult nowadays for most writers, e-books offer the opportunity for anyone who wants to publish to have their books read,” said Mrs Bruce. “There can be a chasm of difference between books that have been through the publishing process and those published on the back of self-editing. Opportunities are there for the grasping.”

All are welcome to the panel-led discussion. Admission for non-members of the society will be £3.
