HAWICK’S Lee Armstrong has won the September RBS Try of the Month for a fine score against Biggar.

Armstrong, 23, a former winner of National Two Player of the Season when he was at Hawick YM, was praised by Scotland’s specialist skills coach Duncan Hodge, for the touchdown.

The try came about as Armstrong followed up a high kick from stand-off Rory Hutton. Armstrong leapt, caught the ball, and with options to pass both left and right, handed off then ghosted through a gap for the score.

“I was in two minds whether to chase it at first,” said Armstrong who was fielded at full-back in that RBS National League game at Mansfield Park.

“We have worked on our chase in training, where you aim to catch the ball under pressure.

“I just remember jumping above the Biggar player, breaking through the tackle and, before I knew it, being on my way.”

Hodge, the former Scotland stand-off, who works on kicking and catching skills, congratulated Lee on his try.

“It’s not a skill you see in every match, so well done Lee,” he said.

“As a nation, it’s a skill we would love to see more of. Players attacking the ball in the air and winning the ball back immediately provide a massive boost for their team.”

Lee received a trophy from RBS and Scottish Rugby to mark his achievement, plus two tickets for a Scotland international at Murrayfield.

Clubs at all levels can submit nominations for try of the month. Full details on www.scottishrugby.org/nominate.
