EoS FIRST DIVISION

GRANT McKENZIE reports

from Whitestone Park

BOTH teams played out a hard-fought match, which saw three penalties, a spectacular goal and a red card in an action-packed second half.

The first period didn’t have much to write home about. The visitors were eager to try to exploit the left and enjoyed success in getting behind the Rovers’ back line.

However, the home side grew into the half and arguably created the best opportunities, with full back Ron Fleming, having a fine game, shooting over the bar after a low corner found him at the penalty spot.

The second period would see the game spring into life on 49 minutes as Fishermen’s winger Simpson cut into the box and the resultant challenge was late, leaving referee John Weir in no doubt.

Up stepped Sean Simpson to take the spot kick. However, it was poor, low and central, and easy for John Nisbet to save.

Eyemouth’s frustration looked to be boiling over in the final 10 minutes with Kieran Ainslie seeing red for a dangerous challenge. Despite the numbers advantage, though, Peebles fell behind.

Another Eyemouth attack won them a second penalty given for handball, much to the home side’s consternation. It was converted this time, low and to the left, by James Wilson.

It all looked set for the visitors to take the points, but for a truly excellent goal on 90 minutes for the Rovers. Substitute David Knox received the ball 30 yards from the goal and, with Jonathan Gall off his line, his sublime strike dropped over the keeper’s head and clipped the crossbar to bring a late dramatic equaliser.

However, the drama wasn’t over and straight from the restart the visitors won their third penalty of the game.

James Wilson stepped up on 91 minutes and his fine penalty sealed the points for the Fishermen.

Peebles Rovers: J. Nisbet, Ron Fleming, S. Galloway, J. Girdwood, Ray Fleming, S. Watson (D. Knox), M. Cairns, M. Mckenzie, C. Edgar, J. Telford (C. Nwanze), G. Shortreed.
