Hawick 13
Jed-Forest 6
RBS NATIONAL LEAGUE
HAWICK entertained basement boys Jed-Forest at Mansfield Park and pulled off a less than convincing win with the visitors gaining a bonus point in a drab, error-strewn encounter.
The league is now at the halfway stage, and the home outfit certainly didn’t heighten any promotion hopes with this performance, while the visitors look towards an uphill struggle to survive relegation.
Greens full back Neil Renwick, opened the scoring after four minutes with a well-taken penalty goal. Soon after, referee Gary Gordon yellow-carded Jed prop Graham Slorance for repeated infringement.
Renwick landed his second penalty goal to increase the lead before the Greens scored the only try of the game. The home forwards produced quick ruck ball and good handling by the backs saw Renwick outstrip the Jed defence to score a good try, which he duly converted.
Home skipper Greg Cottrell was sin-binned just before the break and Jed stand-off Ian Chisholm converted a penalty goal to make it 13-3.
The second half was a stop-start affair, with both sides making elementary mistakes, although Lindsay Gibson and Rory Hutton did provide a spark for the Greens that was missing in the first half.
Jed full back Lewis Young was the biggest threat for the Riverside Park team. Greens lock, Craig Smith, strayed offside after 75 minutes to allow Chisholm to land his second penalty and the only points in the second half.
