SELKIRK RFC got back to winning ways last week with a hard-fought victory over Border rivals Jed-Forest (see page 15) and this weekend they face a Biggar challenge, writes Fiona Scott.

Derek Armstrong’s team have been languishing at the foot of the National League along with last week’s opponents Jed. But, with former Hawick prop Bruce McNeil back in the pack following his suspension and a few more players returning from injury, Selkirk’s coaching team know that tomorrow’s visitors cannot be taken lightly and are preparing for another tough game at Philiphaugh (3pm ko).

“I was chuffed they won the game last week, but they can be that much better,” admitted head coach Brian Cassidy.

“I know they can and the supporters know they can, but how to get it into their heads? Well I just don’t know that. We’ll keep working on it and hope that something gets through.”

Crucially for Saturday’s game, all the Selkirk forwards are fit and raring to go. Darren Clapperton is not available due to work commitments, but Scott Hendrie is ready to make a return after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Cassidy added: “I have always said that it’s the forwards who win the games, so I’m pleased that everyone is available this week.

“On paper we should be making easy work of the likes of Jed and Biggar, but they are improving all the time and will be desperate to get away from the relegation zone, so we will have to be prepared to put up a fight. We did that last week and it got us through. With Hawick away to leaders Glasgow Hawks this weekend and second-placed Watsonians travelling to play Kelso, we could see a few changes in position on the table next week, so it’s important that we get the win tomorrow to keep us in the mix.”

z Selkirk A are on the road this weekend with a National Reserve Division One tie against Dundee HSFP 2nds at Mayfield while Selkirk Stormers face Lasswade 2nds at Burmill in a Reserve League East Division One clash. Both matches kick-off at 3pm.
