Boertien lifts October Quaich as calm weather hits Braidwood

SUNDAY was another beautiful day, kicked off with really sharp frost, but then the sun came out.

And to top things off, there was no wind either!

Taking advantage of the still air, Jim Black elevated the cherry picker on the High Pheasant including the 180-degee clay in the first layout of the day.

Despite the lovely weather, or maybe in part because of the bright light conditions, the highest score in the trophy round was 32 – Gordon Boertien (Lockerbie) taking the October Quaich after a shoot-off with Jim Brodie (Denholm) and Scott Livingston (Edinburgh).

Nigel Rock (Kelso) and Mark Mitchell (Duns) just missed out on joining the shoot-off after finishing with the second highest score of 31. Brodie then went on to tie the second layout with Donald Livingston (Edinburgh) on 33.

Runner-up slot was also a three-way affair, Jim Henderson (Cumbria), John Craig (Edinburgh) and Stuart Rankine (Jedburgh) breaking 31 clays each.

Brodie was the day’s High Gun by three clear targets, winning the aggregate title on a total of 65 ex 80. Livingston Senior was closest on 62, whilst Boertien broke 61 and Livingston Junior 60.

Congratulations to Braidwood trio – Mel Thomson (Loanhead), Suzanne Little (Clovenfords) and Lorraine Learmonth (Heriot) – who missed Sunday’s event to take part in and win the ladies’ team event at Morton Clay Ground’s All Round west of Edinburgh.

The next shoot at Braidwood is on October 21 when John Ross has the opportunity to defend the Ian Graham Cup, while the Whinneybrae Rosebowl, for a member with the highest score who has not yet won a Braidwood trophy, is also up for grabs.

This will be the last shoot of the year on summer opening hours. Entries close at 12.30pm. All welcome.
