South of Scotland Schools 38

FRIENDLY

IT HAS been 13 years since the South of Scotland Schools fielded a rugby team, so there was a lot of excitement on the bus as the cream of local players from various schools made their way to take on Dollar Academy, writes Stuart Cameron.

The South, led by Hawick High School’s Ross Graham, only had one training session before this match, so the boys were certainly going in at the deep end.

It was a warm-up for the upcoming game against Rugby, as reported in TheSouthern a couple of weeks ago.

In contrast, Dollar, with Rob Moffat in charge, had already played this season and they dominated the first half, running in six tries to one and turning round 34-7 up. South scrum half Kyle Stillie scored a try early on, converted by Ruari Howarth.

To their credit, South refused to lie down and came out fighting in the second period, winning the second half 31-19 and the try count 5-3, something which they will have been very satisfied with. Sam Bandeen, Sam Cuthers, Gary Robertson, Finlay Simpson and Jack Harrison all recorded touchdowns, with Howarth converting three of them.

South Schools: Jack Elliot (Selkirk HS); Sam Cuthers (Kelso HS), Jack Harrison (Peebles HS), Harry Cooper (Kelso HS), Sam Bandeen (Hawick HS); Ruari Howarth (Galashiels Academy), Kyle Stillie (Selkirk HS); Ryan Gibson (Jedburgh GS), Ross Graham (Hawick HS), Gary Robertson (Galashiels Academy), Angus Runciman (Earlston HS), Charlie Woodhouse (Eyemouth HS), Finlay Simpson (Hawick HS), Richard Harrison (Peebles HS), Gavin Blair (Hawick HS).Subs (all played): Callum Crookshanks (Earlston HS), Cole Lothian (Jedburgh GS), Murray Kerr (Earlston HS), Kirk Ford (Hawick HS), Russell McKay (Earlston HS).
