EoS FIRST DIVISION

EYEMOUTH blew away the challenge of Peebles Rovers with three second-half goals on the Berwickshire coast.

Just as Newcastle United’s St James Park controversially had a sponsor added to its title, United’s Warner Park could prefix “blustery”to its name, and Saturday was no exception.

Playing into the wind in the first half, Peebles went behind on 25 minutes.

Gulls’ striker Steven Shennan fired home a hat-trick against Berwick Rangers Reserves the previous weekend, and he was again on the scoresheet, although Rovers manager Stuart Robertson claimed the in-form striker was well offside.

Peebles’ Nicky Cairns missed a penalty at Ormiston the previous weekend to deny his side all three points, but Craig Edgar successfully converted another spot kick after he was fouled in the area.

And just before half-time, Steven Galloway bundled the ball in from close range to give Peebles the lead.

However, Rovers found themselves behind within three minutes of the restart.

Shennan scored his second on 46 minutes before James Wilson added a third on 48 minutes.

And Jonathan Brown rounded off the scoring in the last minute with a superb 25-yard strike to put the home side joint top of the First Division, while Rovers are still searching for their first win.

Robertson said: “I told the players at half-time to think the game is 0-0, but we were very disappointing in the second half and a few harsh words were said in the dressing room afterwards.”

Peebles Rovers: C. Lennon, G. Young, D. Knox, J. Girdwood, A. Williamson, B. Gordon, M. McKenzie, N. Cairns, S. Galloway, C. Edgar, R. Brand. Subs: D. Urey, S. Girdwood.
