JEDBURGH’s Greig Laidlaw slotted over a penalty with the last kick of the game as Scotland secured a historic win over Australia.

Laidlaw’s 82nd minute kick gave the tourists a 9-6 triumph - their first victory Down Under for 30 years - at a rain soaked Hunter Stadium in Newcastle, New South Wales today (Tuesday).

The former Jed-Forest now Edinburgh stand off had put Scotland 6-0 up before Michael Harris replied with kicks either side of half time to level the match.

But the late, late penalty from Laidlaw put an end to Scotland’s seven game losing streak in the most spectacular fashion.

Full back Stuart Hogg of Hawick and hooker Ross Ford from Kelso also starred for a Scotland team who defended superbly to keep out the world number two side.

The victory was the first Scots success in Australia since 1982, when Melrose’s Keith Robertson try and the boot of Selkirk’s John Rutherford contributed to a 12-7 win.
