HORSE lovers are being invited to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a ride in the Borders hills, writes Sally Gillespie.
The Borders branch of the British Horse Society - whose patron is the Queen - has organised the event also to raise money for the charity’s work.
Up to 60 riders have the chance to complete one of three routes of different lengths – two, seven or 14 miles at Bowhill, near Selkirk – on Sunday, June 10.
The longer self-guided routes will include the Duchess’s Drive, a Victorian carriageway in the grounds, parts of the old Ettrick Forest and nearby Minch Moor, while the two-mile route will be around the lochs in front of Bowhill House.
The house will be open for the day, along with the adventure playground, tearoom, gift shop, walks in the grounds and fishing for non-horse riders.
BHS Scotland chairman, Lorraine Young, said: “This is going to be great day.
“The routes are exquisite and offer rewarding riding and great views, there with be prizes galore with rosettes and goody bags to all finishers and, of course, the warm feeling for participants of raising money to support the BHS which does so much for Scotland’s horses.”
The money will go towards the charity’s educational work in access, safety, welfare and training. The first (and longest) ride starts at 10am.
