Scottish Borders Housing Association (SBHA) staff members Mike Wagner and Nicola McIlwraith, pictured, played a major role in the organisation landing a £53,505 grant.

The cash allows SBHA to work with charity Changeworks to tackle fuel poverty.

Mr Wagner said: “We asked tenants in our tenant satisfaction survey to tell us if they have problems with fuel bills and understanding how their heating systems work. Seventy-three per cent of our tenants told us they would be interested in finding out how to reduce their energy bills, with a further 34% requesting help with budgeting and managing food waste.

“We acted on what tenants told us and worked with Changeworks to develop a bid to the Scottish Government.”

He added that the grant would enable SBHA, through the charity, to work with its 5,663 tenants, making the most efficient use of heating systems and securing the best deal from energy companies.

Mr Wagner went on: “Warm homes discount rebates of £140 are available for our tenants who are eligible – e.g. young children in the household and tenants who have a disability, are on low incomes, or over 62.”

These rebates would not affect any cold weather payment or winter fuel payment tenants received.

Changeworks will be carrying out a roadshow for SBHA tenants on managing fuel costs and debt, as well as a “Kitchen Canny”, which provides workshops on household management and the reduction of waste.
