SELKIRK will be “very much in the media spotlight”, admitted Johnnie Thomson this week, when the London Olympic torch comes to town on June 14.

And, in his role as clerk to the Common Riding Trust, Mr Thomson has said any donations towards the replacement of the tradition true blue and scarlet bunting will be most welcome.

“We are hoping that 50 new strings of bunting can be ordered at a cost of around £50 each: a total of about £2,500,” said Mr Thomson.

“With the torch coming through the town the day before our Common Riding and with next year marking the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Flodden, we need to freshen up our stock of flags because Selkirk will be very much in the media spotlight as never before.

“Our trust would therefore certainly appreciate any contributions towards this expenditure from individuals, businesses, clubs or societies.”

Last week, we revealed that the Royal Burgh Standard Bearer, who will be appointed at the end of this month, will be part of a special welcoming party in the Market Place when the Olympic torch passes through Selkirk.

Bunting donations should me made to Johnnie Thomson, Clerk to Selkirk Common Riding Trust, 19 West Port, Selkirk, TD7 4DG.
