ONE of the highlights of the orienteering calendar at this time of year is the weekend of two British Championships.

Held in Yorkshire this year, the Short Distance Championships took place at York University and consisted of heats and finals taking about 12-15 minutes each.

With everyone chasing the few places in the A finals, and only seconds separating runners, competition round the intricate grounds was fierce.

Only three Roxburgh Reivers made the A finals, with Fiona Forrest having the best result, on the podium with second place on W35. Robin Sloan finished fifth on M65 and Lindsey Knox placed seventh on W50. Barry Veitch had the consolation of winning the B final on M40.

The British Middle Championships, with winning times of around 30 minutes, were held at Strensall Army Camp just north of York.

In glorious sunshine, the best performance by a Reiver came from Kirstin Maxwell, a brilliant third place on W20 elite.

The next local event is at Elibank, near Walkerburn on April 21. More details at www.roxburghreivers.org.uk
