PEEBLESSHIRE school children helped create Dawyck Diamond Wood on Monday.

About 40 students from Peebles High and Newlands Primary schools planted trees on Dawyck Estates with staff from Dawyck Botanic Garden, for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The estates’ managing director, Robert Balfour, said: “It’s about trying to get people who live mainly in a town to appreciate the outside world. It is lovely to see so many children being involved in the planting of some of the trees and very nice to have had some of the Dawyck Botanic Garden staff here to help”.

The youngsters also created a natural art gallery and used twigs, moss, stones and other natural materials to make a portrait of the Queen.

The wood is one of 60 diamond woods being created across the UK as part of the Woodland Trust’s jubilee woods campaign aimed at planting six million trees to mark the 60th year of the Queen’s reign.

The estates gave land to the Royal Botanic Gardens for the arboretum in 1978: Mr Balfour said: “The planting of the Jubilee Wood continues the estates’ commitment to forestry and we are extremely proud to have been accepted as one of the 60 Diamond Jubilee Woods.”
