Pencaitland 4

Hawick Waverley 3

SOUTH CUP SEMI-FINAL

IN what turned out to be a seven-goal thriller, Waverley drew first blood when Dean McColm latched on to a Taylor Hope pass and waltzed round the Pencaitland keeper before shooting home.

Minutes later, Hawick had a golden opportunity to add to their tally on being awarded a penalty after Jordan Yardley had been downed in the box.

There was to be no goal, though, as McColm hit the post with the resultant spot kick. Pencaitland grabbed an equaliser before the break and, following the changeover, edged ahead.

The action continued at a lively pace and Ian Turnbull put Waverley on level-pegging, finding the net with a header on meeting a Hope corner kick.

Pencaitland then retained their lead and five minutes from time slotted away a fourth.

Waverley still had something to offer, though, and reduced the leeway through a strike from Hope.

Ancrum 2

Hawick Legion 1

WADDELL CUP THIRD ROUND

FOLLOWING a no-scoring first half, during which neither keeper was seriously tested, Legion’s Luke Cooper hit the bar with a header.

Ancrum hit back to take the lead through Ewan Armstrong and Gary Learmonth duly added a second.

Legion battled to get back into the picture from here on, but had nothing to show for their efforts until Chris Brown scored two minutes from time.

Newtown 1

Gala Hotspur 2

WADDELL CUP THIRD ROUND

ANDY Hardie scored direct from a corner in the final minute to give Gala Hotspur a shock Waddell Cup win over Division A side Newtown.

The home side had the best of the opening play, Spurs keeper Scott Crawford saving well more than once. But Gala started to create chances of their own and Darren Tweedie had a shot saved.

Spurs were awarded a penalty on 60 minutes when Hardie was bundled over in the penalty area, but Rob Young missed from the spot, the first penalty miss of his career. Newtown took the lead 10 minutes later as Russell Hunter drove through to score.

The game looked to be heading for extra time after Lee Brown’s overhead kick set up Tweedie to fire home from close range on 85 minutes, before Hardie scored with a corner which flew in at the front post.

There was still time for Crawford to save his opposing number’s header after he came up for an injury-time corner.
