BORDERS interest at the Brewin Dolphin Finals Day at Murrayfield last Sunday was focused on the under 15 final with girls from Langholm, Hawick, Selkirk and Melrose in the South Barbarians side along with some from Murrayfield Wanderers.

Unfortunately the South lost in the final to Grantown Grammar by 41-29.

It was a fiercely contested final which was in the balance up to the closing minutes with the South side only two points behind, but injuries mounted and Grantown added two late tries.

The South began strongly and took the game to the opposition with some powerful running and it was not long before they opened the scoring when Hawick lass Lisa Thomson ran out of her own 22 and side stepped two defenders and sprinted threequarters the length of the pitch for a try which she also converted. Thomson had all the South points with a haul of five tries and two conversions.

Grantown points came from their captain Aliesha Brown (2), Sael Chisholm-Massheder, Lesley Davis, Ailsa Hepburn, Rhona Davis and Carla Sermanni, and Megan Murray added three conversions. Aliesha Brown was selected player of the tournament for her two tries and strong running.

All the South girls gave their best and could not be faulted for effort or commitment.

South Barbarians squad: Nicole Campbell (Hawick), Emily Beattie (Langholm), Lisa Thomson (Hawick), Megan Paisley (Langholm), Rachel Law (Murrayfield Wanderers), Caitlin Cottrell (Selkirk), Lindsey Rae (Langholm), Rachael Young (Langholm), Iona Bruce (Murrayfield Wanderers), Ellie Seed (Langholm), Zeth Clarkson (Hawick), Lauren Meager (Melrose), Samantha Sodden, Heather Reid, Jenny Ward (all Murrayfield Wanderers).
